ATHENS, OHIO - HALLOWEEN BLOCK PARTY WRAP-UP MEDIA RELEASE

October 30, 2011

Athens Police and Ohio University Police Departments handled 109 calls for service during the hours of 7:00 pm Saturday and 3:00 am Sunday.  There were 50 persons arrests and processed through booking.  43 of those arrested were sent to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.  Athens Police Department arrests accounted for 23 of the 50 persons with the other persons being Ohio University Police Department, Athens County Sheriff’s Office and other agency arrests.

City of Athens officials noted that this year’s crowd was light during the early hours of the event but increased in size later in the evening, but overall crowd size was typical of past years.  All crowds broke up quickly after 1:00 am Sunday and Court Street was cleared of persons by police officers at 2:30 am.

A breakdown of total calls for service and arrests for both agencies are still being complied and will be released Monday.

Outside agency police officers were released at about 3:00 am.  Numerous Athens Police officers remained on duty to assist the night shift in dealing with sporadic problems.

Athens County EMS did note an increase in calls from last year, as of 3:00 am Sunday they had responded to 46 calls for assistance.  Most of the EMS calls were alcohol related in nature.  O’Bleness Memorial Hospital Emergency room reported that they had treated 13 block party related patients during the same time period.

The Athens Fire Department had no incidents of significance to report for the evening.

Paula Moseley, Athens City Safety-Service Director commented “The evening was relatively calm in the event area.  The City of Athens is grateful to the collaborative efforts and planning with Ohio University, Athens County Sheriff’s Office and the Clean and Safe Halloween Committee and all of the Athens City and outside supporting agencies”.

Tom Pyle, Athens Police Chief commented “I would like to recognize all of the various agencies that assisted our department with this year’s event, to include the State of Ohio Incident Management Team, the Ohio Department of Public Safety, The State Fire Marshall’s Office, and various Law Enforcement agencies from all over the State. We could not handle this event without their assistance”.
